Pulled Apart By Horses

Pulled Apart By Horses

Named by many as the most exciting live band in the UK at the moment, Pulled Apart by Horses are very much in their ascendency right now. With their debut album still hot off the presses, and a prestigious support slot for arena behemoths Muse approaching fast, PABH are surely one of the hottest tickets in the country right now. I got the chance to shoot them live at Manchester’s Deaf Institute recently.

Notes:

I can’t adequately explain how good PABH are live, but having seen them develop over the last few years, I’d struggle to list many bands who play with more passion or energy. The crowd at the Deaf Institute had been fairly quiet for the preceding few bands, but the moment Horses hit the stage, it was like a bomb going off in the room – with people body slamming and disco dancing in equal measure.

Photo-wise, I used liberal amounts of bounced fill-flash for this show, with two units shooting at the (thankfully white) ceiling at full power. With the camera ISO cranked to 3200 throughout, this resulted in great fill light, with loads of scope for maintaining deep depth of focus using a small aperture. (Full Disclosure: Thanks for this technique has to be sent to a certain Mr North for indirectly explaining his own settings for this venue to achieve a similar look.)

As ever, it was a real pleasure to shoot for the PABH guys, and I’d be more than happy to shoot for them again. Feel free to check out more shots from this show in the gallery below, or click any of the above images for a larger view.
